The big picture

PCOS is more than a reproductive issue affecting a small percentage of people, it is a growing problem that highlights barriers to equitable healthcare.

While current literature points to potential treatments, it does not change the fact that you may have to navigate your treatment journey and face numerous barriers along the way. Obstacles like improper medical support, mental health co-morbidities and socioeconomic status are not only critical for PCOS, but also apply to other medical conditions affecting more than just one subset of patients. If we spread awareness about PCOS, a larger conversation can be had regarding the lack of clarity and support women feel in the medical system. Building compassion will set a strong foundation for equitable healthcare changes for women on a larger scale. As individuals are humanized and considered beyond their medical diagnosis, a patient-centered system can be formed that helps women overcome the mental burdens present when navigating conditions with limited information.

It remains critical to examine patient perspectives and understand the nuance of female medical issues in order to drive meaningful change in treatment plans for PCOS and other female reproductive issues.

Even if this site didn’t spark your desire to create large-scale changes to standard medicine, I hope it gave you a space to learn about your body and condition. The first step to empowering yourself is to learn and apply that knowledge. You are not the only one struggling with your diagnosis; this is something you should find comfort in. If nothing else, perhaps this opened your eyes to new treatments and options that were limiting you in the past. Just as I acknowledge everyone’s uniqueness, I understand that not everyone will walk away with the same takeaways and I think that is what makes this mission so special. As you embark on this journey, use it as an opportunity to learn about yourself and support other women whose story may look different from yours.
